How to Turn Off DLSS: Upscaling, Frame Generation and Related Settings

Open the game’s graphics settings and turn off the specific DLSS features you want to disable. Super Resolution, frame generation and other DLSS features can have separate controls. For native-resolution comparison, also check render scale, dynamic resolution and alternative upscalers. There is no single menu path shared by every game.

01

Decide what you actually want to disable

If your aim is native rendering, focus on the upscaling method and internal resolution. If your aim is removing generated frames, disable frame generation. If you dislike a particular lighting reconstruction or neural-rendering effect, look for that feature’s separate control.

The DLSS family contains several technologies, so switching one off does not prove all the others are off. Take a screenshot or note the current settings before changing them. That makes it easier to return to the previous configuration if the visual or performance result is not what you expected.

02

Find the in-game upscaling option

Open the graphics, display or advanced settings menu and look for Upscaling, Resolution Scaling or DLSS Super Resolution. Select Off, Native or an appropriate alternative according to the game. Some titles place DLAA in the same selector; that is native-resolution AI anti-aliasing rather than DLSS upscaling.

Bethesda’s Oblivion Remastered settings provide a concrete example with separate upscaling and frame-generation entries. Other games organize the controls differently. Use the title’s current documentation rather than assuming a screenshot from another game describes your menu.

For the documented reference, see Bethesda’s example of separately listed upscaling and frame-generation controls.

03

Disable frame generation independently

Locate DLSS Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation or a similarly named generated-frame option and turn it off if you want only game-rendered frames. A multiplier menu may have its own off state. Apply the setting and restart the game if it explicitly requests that.

If a separate interpolation feature is enabled in a driver or third-party tool, the in-game DLSS control may not govern it. Identify the actual implementation before troubleshooting. Do not assume every smooth-motion effect originates from the game’s native DLSS menu just because the computer has an NVIDIA graphics card.

04

Check remaining reconstruction and resolution settings

Review Ray Reconstruction or DLSS Neural Rendering where the game supports them and disable them individually if that is part of your goal. Also inspect FSR, XeSS, temporal upscaling, dynamic resolution and render-scale settings. A game can remain internally below native resolution after DLSS is disabled.

Set the output to the intended display resolution and choose a fixed internal scale when making a native comparison. Be careful with supersampling: a scale above native or an elevated DSR resolution can make the workload heavier than ordinary native rendering. Record the complete configuration rather than one toggle.

05

Review overrides or modifications only when relevant

If you used the NVIDIA app to customize the game profile, inspect its relevant overrides and restore the intended defaults. If you installed replacement graphics files, follow that project’s documented removal procedure. An ordinary in-game off setting should not require randomly deleting DLLs.

Do not reset every driver setting merely to solve one game’s configuration. Change the specific profile or feature involved and keep a record. A clean native game installation can be a useful diagnostic baseline if modifications have made it unclear which implementation is actually active.

06

Compare performance and image quality fairly

Use the same scene and keep unrelated visual settings fixed. Native rendering can reduce FPS compared with upscaling, and disabling frame generation can reduce displayed frame totals. Neither result by itself proves that the toggle failed.

Watch image stability, detail and input response according to your reason for disabling the feature. If you only wanted to eliminate one artifact, you may prefer a different quality mode or model after comparison. The key is knowing which processing stage changed and verifying the whole resolution path rather than assuming every DLSS-related control is one switch.

07

Frequently asked questions

Does turning off upscaling also disable frame generation?

Not in every game. Check the separate controls and the title’s dependencies.

Is DLAA the same as disabling all AI processing?

No. DLAA uses AI anti-aliasing at native resolution. It avoids DLSS upscaling but is still a reconstruction-based anti-aliasing option.

Why did FPS fall after disabling DLSS?

Native rendering can require more work, and removing generated frames lowers the displayed total. Compare like-for-like settings and distinguish rendering rate from presentation rate.
