Is DLSS Upscaling or Frame Generation? The Feature Family Explained

DLSS is a family that includes both upscaling and frame generation, along with other image-processing features. DLSS Super Resolution is the upscaling component. DLSS Frame Generation creates additional displayed frames. They are separate technologies that can be combined in supported games, and a game saying it has DLSS does not necessarily support every member of the family.

01

Start with the family name and the exact feature

The letters DLSS began with an upscaling-related name, but current product usage covers several neural-rendering technologies. A version label can therefore describe a generation of the family without explaining which individual capabilities a game implements.

Read the full graphics-setting name. Super Resolution, Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction are not alternate spellings for the same effect. When comparing hardware or troubleshooting, record those feature names separately. That prevents an older RTX card supporting upscaling from being incorrectly described as supporting every function announced in a newer DLSS generation.

02

Super Resolution reconstructs the output image

Super Resolution uses lower-resolution rendering and additional information to reconstruct a higher-resolution output. Its potential performance benefit comes from reducing some rendering work while paying the cost of reconstruction. Quality modes change the trade-off, and model versions can alter the result.

NVIDIA’s documentation lists this separately from frame generation. You can use supported Super Resolution without generating extra frames. The game still produces one rendered update for each presented reconstruction result, although other timing and display features can also influence what reaches the screen.

For the documented reference, see NVIDIA’s feature-by-feature DLSS and Reflex documentation.

03

Frame Generation adds intermediate presentation frames

Frame generation produces additional output between game-rendered frames. It can make motion appear smoother and raise the displayed FPS total, but those generated frames do not represent the same number of additional simulation updates or independent input samples.

Hardware and integration requirements differ from Super Resolution. Native single-frame DLSS generation and RTX 50 Multi Frame Generation should also be distinguished. The presence of an upscaling selector does not establish that the game includes the required frame-generation path, and a generated-frame total should not be compared blindly with ordinary rendered FPS.

04

DLAA and Ray Reconstruction solve other tasks

DLAA applies the related AI anti-aliasing approach at native resolution instead of using a lower-resolution input for upscaling. Ray Reconstruction addresses ray-tracing denoising and image reconstruction in supported rendering paths. Neither should be described simply as inserting new frames.

Games can expose these controls differently, and dependencies may vary. An option can be unavailable because the relevant ray-tracing path is disabled or because the GPU does not support another required feature. Consult the title’s documentation before assuming a missing control means the driver or entire DLSS installation is broken.

05

Keep newer neural rendering distinct too

DLSS 5 adds 3D-Guided Neural Rendering for lighting and material enhancement in supported games. That is another reason the family name should not be reduced to one function. It does not change the definitions of the older upscaling and frame-generation components.

Check the current hardware matrix and integration for that specific feature. A game with DLSS 4.5 reconstruction does not automatically include DLSS 5 neural rendering. Likewise, an announcement about the latest model should not be presented as a promise that every compatible GPU receives every new capability.

The newer feature is described separately in NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 neural-rendering announcement.

06

Report settings in a way readers can reproduce

A useful configuration states output resolution, Super Resolution mode and model, frame-generation state or multiplier, and any active Ray Reconstruction or neural rendering. Include the GPU and game version when the information concerns compatibility or performance.

That description is more informative than DLSS on. It explains whether the benefit came from less rendering work, more displayed frames or a visual reconstruction change. Once those stages are separated, choosing settings and reading benchmarks becomes easier because the same family name no longer hides several different operations.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use DLSS upscaling without frame generation?

Yes, when the game supports that configuration. They are separate features.

Does DLSS always mean AI-generated extra frames?

No. Super Resolution reconstructs an image; it does not itself mean intermediate frames are being inserted.

Why does an RTX card show some DLSS options but not others?

Feature requirements differ by GPU generation, game integration and settings. Check the exact unavailable feature rather than the family label alone.
